Recycled Craft: Denim Blooms Pins

January 10, 2017 by Allison Cooling 5 Comments

Denim reinvented here, in the form of cute bloom brooches! Pins and brooches are trending for fall and winter style, so why not make your very own out of recycled blue jeans?

Adding rhinestones and filigree components really dresses these pieces up. They are super easy to make (cutting and gluing) yet look super chic when pinned on a blazer or coat.

You can use a mix of denim washes here (dark and light) to create multicolored flowers.

Step 1: Gather materials. Needed is a pair or two of old blue jeans, sewing scissors, pliers (for opening jump rings on charms), crystals and a mix of filigree metals. You can get these at any craft store or even on Amazon. I used a mix of gold and silver flower filigree components for an eclectic vibe. If you are using small bead drops or tassels, make sure you have jump rings (6mm) so that you can attach to your filigree.

You will also need pin backings, which you can get at any craft store. You will need hot glue to glue everything together!

Step 2: Cut small circles out of the denim. You can create any size you want, I used anywhere from 1″-2″, the bigger the circle, the bigger the flower.

Step 3: It helps to create one circle, then use as a template for the rest so they are a similar size. I’m terrible at cutting evenly, so using a template really helps me! You will need about 5 petals per flower then one more circle to glue underneath.

Step 4: Use hot glue to glue the backs of the petals together, and secure the center with the sixth petal. Glue the pin backing in the middle.

Step 5: Layer more petals on top of your base (if you want) and then finish by gluing the filigree pieces in the center.

If you’d like to add tassels, hook them into the filigree piece so they stay secure! Let the glue dry.

Sport a bunch of them on your jacket for a trendy look, or stick with just one for a classic vibe. Either way, have fun mixing and matching materials (I even added a feather on the one) for something that’s uniquely you!
