Do you love glitz and glam? If so, this embellished clutch tutorial will be right up your alley! Using a mix of crystal flatbacks, beads and chain, you can create your own DIY accessory that’s perfect for parties and nights out. Let the purse do the talking!
Embellished fashion is trending on the runway for spring and summer. Designers like Fendi and Dolce and Gabbana are bedazzling purses, sunglasses, shoes and more. This is an easy DIY to get the look of high fashion, for less!
Decorate as much or as little of your purse as you would like. It’s all about the bling for me!
Gather materials. Needed are smooth faux leather clutches, Gem Tac and acrylic flatback gems (in all colors and sizes). If you would like to also create the tassel charm, you’ll need chain, eye pins, a mix of beads, 10mm jump rings and jewelry making pliers/cutters.
First, start off by laying down your crystals and arranging them into your desired pattern. There have been SO many times when I just started gluing…then regretted it! Laying the crystals out first allows you to edit your design without having to re-glue each time you change your mind! 🙂
Once you have your desired pattern, use a small toothpick to pick up dabs of glue. Lift off each crystal, dab glue on the spot it came from, then press back down. This allows you to follow your pattern, and keeps gluing organized!
You don’t need a lot of Gem-Tac for the crystals to adhere, so don’t use large globs. The glue does dry clear, but you want the least amount of glue showing around the crystal as you can get.
For the silver clutch, I went with a more organic design—I mixed jewel tone colors on the middle strap (in no organized pattern) for major glam! I still played around with color placement before gluing, so that the colors were evenly spread out.
Fill in any cracks and gaps between larger crystals with small 4mm or 5mm crystals.
If you would like to add an extra charm tassel dangle, gather a mix of beads, chain, jump rings and eye pins. Choose colors that match well with the crystals you glued onto the clutch.
Create a beaded link with your chosen beads. I used a 12mm pave bead and an 8mm faceted crystal. Cut varying lengths of chain (3-5″) and attach to the bottom of the link with a 6mm jump ring.
Add a 6mm jump ring or a lobster to the top of your beaded link. Slide or clip the charm on the wrist strap (or chain, if it has chain) to finish.
These purses pair perfectly with a pair of sunnies, skinny jeans, tee, and flats for a casual look. Or, mix with a maxi dress and heels for elegant style.
