Get blissful with this customized mirrored DIY jewelry box! This bohemian home decor piece is simple, yet chic and gives any room that hippie vibe. I’ve always loved mirrored boxes but thought they could be dressed up a bit in order to give them more character.
For this tutorial, I’ll show you how to glue velcro to stones to mix and match looks for your DIY jewerly box. By simply gluing on small pieces of velcro to the bottom of your stones and the top of your mirror box, you’ll be able to change up the style of the piece anytime you want!
And I couldn’t just leave the stones plain – I’ll show you how to glam them up with metallic tattoos and some Swarovski crystals. Because everything is better with a bit of sparkle, no? It’s a very easy technique to get the tattoos onto the stones, but it helps to use smoother stones and not crystal clusters like an amethyst.
I tumble my own stones (some of them used here) and am very into the metaphysical powers of stones. What’s great about these wish boxes is that you can put anything you want in the box, and the stone on top can help release some of its “vibes” into the contents!
You can put jewelry, money, mementos, nail polish, beauty supplies, and more into these boxes. You can also use them as keepsake boxes to store memories, write notes to yourself, or mantras.
A quartz topper (shown below at bottom) is a really great universal stone. It helps balance and focus energy and dispels negativity.
A rose quartz topper (shown below, at back) is great at releasing pent up anger while encouraging love and forgiveness.
Himalayan rock salt (big chunky stone in middle) is totally cleansing. It releases ions into the air that help balance energy. A great, great everyday stone.
I would suggest switching out the stones and the contents of your wish box depending on what you need.
Are we ready? Let’s get started!
Step 1: Gather materials. Needed are gemstones, metallic tattoos, velcro, Gem-Tac, and a mirrored box. I got my mirrored box at Ross, but you could also find similar pieces at Home Goods or TJMaxx! Make sure you pick stones with a flat bottom to glue to.
You could also decorate your gemstones with crystal flat backs if you want extra bling. If so, then gather up some of those too! I used Swarovski 4mm AB crystals, Blue Zircon crystals, and clear crystals.
Step 2: Start by cutting a small piece of velcro and glue to top of box. If you accidentally get some glue on the mirror like I did (I’m NOT a clean crafter, I always make a mess!) clean it up with GooGone.
Select which metallic tattoos you want to use — use shapes that fit each gemstone. Cut out the tattoos.
Step 3: Peel off the plastic sheet on the tattoo and place facedown on your stone. Wet the entire surface with water, gently, using a paintbrush. Press down on the tattoo for about 30 seconds. Gently slide off the paper backing and your tattoo should be adhered to your rock. Be gentle! Let dry.
Feel free to decorate with crystals for added sparkle – always a good idea!! Use headpins or eye pins to help place small dabs of glue on top of your rock, then press down the flatback to adhere. Let dry.
Cut a small strip of velcro and adhere to back of stone using more Gem-Tac. Gem-Tac takes a while to dry (the bottle says 24 hours), but it holds tight and holds to many surfaces. You could also use E6000 glue, if you want.
Create a bunch of these glitzy stones and back each with a small piece of velcro. This way, you can easily mix and match box toppers to suit your mood!
Make sure the rocks you pick are big enough to cover up the velcro beneath. Use big chunky stones or even amethyst/citrine clusters.
Mix and match by simply switching stones!
