DIY Nursery and Kid’s Room Paper Decor

May 24, 2016 by Martha Bonneau Leave a Comment

When adding a child to your family I think we can all agree that decorating their room is one of the things we all look forward to working on during the wait.  We recently added our second daughter to our family a few months ago and while waiting for her to come home from China, we all worked together to come up with the perfect space for her and her sister.

As perfect as we thought it was at the time, we have already started to change things up a little.  I added some paper touches through favorite prints and a couple of printables I designed, but I have decided I want to incorporate a few more DIY paper decor projects so I have been surfing the web and am sharing some of my favorite finds.

Two of my favorite girl’s room decor ideas are tissue paper moms and tassel garlands.  They can be created in any color and size to match your decor and are super easy to make with supplies that are readily available.  They work as well in a nursery as they do in a little girl’s or even teen’s room.

Paper lanterns are a great base for so many fun DIY projects.  They don’t even have to be used as lanterns, they can be decorated and used in multiples in your child’s room like these whimsical hot air balloon lanterns. Make a few BB-8 lanterns for the Star Wars fan in your home (template and how-to video are included in the link).  My favorite by far are these panda lanterns, my girls would love these, they are so cute I want them in my own room!

Comic book inspired projects are perfect for the superhero fan in your home.  This DIY superhero canvas lets you display your favorite comic book art in your child’s room.  Create comic book letters for your child’s initials, they can be displayed on a wall, shelf or picture ledge and would make fun bookends as well.  Pick up an old chair at a thrift store and create this comic book chair that would be perfect as a desk chair.

Scrapbook paper, in our house it seems to multiply so I am always looking for projects to use it up.  I adore this DIY letter wall. You can create the entire alphabet or make your child’s name, initials, etc. Create your own one of a kind scrapbook paper wall art  with your favorite scrapbook paper, a little washi, and a silhouette of your child.  Speaking of washi, why not go ahead and create a coordinating washi tape switch plate cover to match your newly created wall decor.

My almost 8 year old daughter is head over heels for dinosaurs these days and has asked for some dino-decor to be added to her playroom.  This modern lettered rawr garland is first on our to-do list. These dinosaur canvases received a thumbs up from her as well. If you are designing a dino-nursery, these pterodactyl puppets could easy be used to make a mobile for over the crib.

Still looking for ideas, how about some free printables? From printables for the nursery to artwork for your kid’s walls, these printables are a quick, easy and free(!) way to decorate on a budget.

I live with my husband, 7 and 4 year old daughters, and a pug named Pixie in Crystal Lake, Illinois which is in the ‘burbs NW of Chicago.
I started scrapping in 2006 and was quickly addicted!I was an avid scrapper until late summer of 2010 when we started our adoption journey, at that point I was overwhelmed with paperwork (and emotions!) and I had to put something on the back burner in my life but I knew I would eventually come back to it.
We welcomed our daughter home from China in December of 2011 and a few months later I found my groove again and pulled out all of those supplies that had been tucked away.
I started out scrapping again doing traditional layouts, but at the beginning of this year I jumped into Project Life and I love it!
When I’m not scrapping I am usually spending time with our daughters which means library time, going on walks, thrifting (they love it as much as I do!) or watching Kung Fu Panda for the millionth time.I also have an Etsy shop Panda Eight Designs where I sell scrapbooking flair that I design.
