Jewelry Around the World Day 4: Pueblo Dream Catcher DIY Earrings

August 20, 2015 by Gloria Uhler

Jewelry Around the WorldWelcome! It’s Day 4 of our Jewelry Around the World Promotion, and we’re so excited to share all of these DIY jewelry projects with you. These DIY Earrings are super easy to make, on-trend, and so dreamy!

Inspired by dream catchers made by Pueblo crafters, these DIY earrings don’t include the webbing usually found in designs popular in Southwestern native tribes and Spanish/Mexican cultures. Nevertheless, the feathers, silver, and turquoise elements on this DIY jewelry design impart the flavor and charm of the region. Simple wire wraps on smooth silver adds another texture to these homemade earrings making them an absolute must-have!

Pueblo Dream Catcher DIY Earrings

Supplies

  • 22 gauge round dead soft silver wire
  • 2 feather charms 1” long
  • .25” long silver chain links – 2
  • turquoise briolet beads (approx. .75” long)
  • earring wires
  • 29mm closed jump ring – 2
  • jewelry pliers and cutter
  • 6mm round mandrel or other object

Pueblo Dream Catcher DIY Earrings

1 – Cut a piece of wire to measure 7”.

2 – Leaving a .25” tail, position the wire to the right of center on the hoop. Wrap the wire around the hoop 13 times, working away from the center. Trim the excess and smooth the wire end with needle nose pliers.

Pueblo Dream Catcher DIY Earrings Step 2

3 – Cut another piece of wire to measure 7.50”. Slide the bead onto the wire, stopping at 4”. Bend the wire on both sides against the bead using your fingers.

Pueblo Dream Catcher DIY Earrings Step 3

4 – Grab the two wires from behind and squeeze them into an upright position using needle nose pliers.

5 – Place a 6mm round mandrel in front of the short wire and wrap it around.

Pueblo Dream Catcher DIY Earrings Step 5

6 – Using flat nose pliers, grasp the loop you created. Wrap the short wire around the base of the loop. Wrap five times in the direction of the bead. Remove excess wire and smooth the end with pliers.

Pueblo Dream Catcher DIY Earrings Step 6

7 – Center the long wire with the bead on the hoop. Wrap the wire, covering the .25” end of the right wire. Create 13 wraps on the left side of the hoop. Trim excess wire and smooth the end.

8 – Straighten the loop created in step 5 so it is centered. Attach the feathers using links from a decorative chain. Connect one on each side of the loop.
