Here’s a fun craft for kids and preteens that speaks their language: Emojis!
Calling all book lovers! These emoji felt bookmarks are perfect for adding a glam vibe to your bookshelf. What’s great about these is that they are super easy to put together (cut and glue), and you can create any character you’d like. They’re a pop of color and sparkle; plus, they’re super cute!
The longest part of this tutorial is the time it takes for the Gem-Tac to dry—making them a little addicting to make! Whip up a bunch quickly for yourself, your besties, and anyone else in your book club! I used flat suede here, but organza or satin ribbon would give an even dressier vibe. Or, try lace for a feminine look. Whatever suits your style!
Let’s get started!
Step 1: Gather materials. Needed are scissors, Gem-Tac glue, crystal flatbacks (I used 4mm AB crystals), flat suede or ribbon and colored felt.
Step 2: Grab a small glass and trace around the glass four times on yellow felt to create your smiley face bases. Cut them out. Using the glass as a stencil helps you get perfect circles!
Step 3: Cut four small hearts from pink felt. Cut two arcs from black felt. This creates your eyes and your smile. If you want a different emoji character, cut the according shapes. I thought this emoji was fitting for any book lover!
Step 4: Sandwich a length of suede or ribbon between two yellow discs with the Gem-Tac. The length of the suede needs to fit your book, so measure your books before cutting. This length will vary per project. Don’t use too much Gem-Tac or the felt won’t lay flat, so spread it to cover the surface of the felt.
Step 5: Glue the second yellow disc on top (spread Gem-Tac evenly in-between discs like a cookie sandwich!! 🙂 ) and decorate top with the hearts and smile. I used a tooth pick to help spread the glue evenly on the felt.
Step 6: Glam it up by gluing on small crystal flatbacks to the hearts. I loved the shine of the AB color here, but use a color fitting to your emoji.
Step 5: Repeat steps 4-6 with the other side. Let the glue dry fully for a few hours. These are great kids crafts—let them create any emoji or character they like!
In addition to the Heart Eyes, I’d love to do a black sparkly heart (why is this NOT an emoji yet?!) or the Unicorn.
Hope you enjoyed this DIY. Thanks for reading!
