Falling Leaves Wire DIY Ornaments

November 1, 2016 by Allison Cooling

These earthy and elegant DIY ornaments are perfect DIY pieces for fall decorating! I’ve mixed gemstone, wire, pearl and feathers to create easy yet chic decor pieces great for hanging in windows, from flower arrangements, or even as table accents for a fall-themed party!

Create these leaf shapes easily with my secret trick — see below — and whip up a whole tree full in no time! I like keeping the colors of these close to nature – pumpkin oranges, leafy greens and plums clearly mimic a fall landscape.

If you love wire wrapped jewelry, this is the perfect project for you. Why not bring wire wrapping into the area of home decor?

Continue below for the full tutorial!

Step 1: Gather materials. You need a variety of beads (I used pearls, stones and glass crystals), 16g colored craft wire, 26g colored craft wire, a jumpring, roundnose pliers and wire cutters and flat suede cord.

You will also need feathers (optional but I recommend!), cord ends, tracing paper and a marker.

Step 2: Start by tracing a leaf shape on tracing paper with a Sharpie or marker. I used a simple maple leaf – but you can use any leaf shape you want! Or, create different styles by mixing leaf shapes.

Step 3: Cut a foot of your 16g wire and create a small loop at the end with the roundnose pliers. Lay the wire on the tracing paper and use your shape as a stencil, tracing the beds and notches by bending the wire with your pliers. Try to stay as close to the leaf shape as possible for a neater silhouette.

Step 4: Wrap the wire end around the loop to close your shape. Create more leaves from the other wire colors.

Step 5: Cut a foot long piece of 26g wire (in a matching color) and wrap at the top loop of the leaf securely.

Step 6: Wrap on a variety of pearls and crystals to the leaf. Be gentle, but wrap securely. You can either wrap the whole leaf or just parts, as I did.

l4

Step 7: To create the inner wraps, simply thread the wire up and down the leaf, stringing on gemstone chips for an earthy look.

Step 8: Create the leather tie by cutting a 12″ piece and sliding through the loop at top of the leaf. String on a bauble bead and knot to secure.

Add a feather to the loop of the leaf with a jumpring (add a cord end to the top of the feather to make it into a charm).

There is no right or wrong way to wrap – I just used touches of the pearls and stones, but feel free to fill your leaves with a bounty of beads! These would make perfect Thanksgiving crafts – have the family create their own leaves at your party.
