Jewelry Around the World Day 7: Hungarian Folk-Style Painted DIY Pendant Tutorial

Jewelry Around the WorldWelcome! It’s Day 7 of our Jewelry Around the World Promotion, and we’re so excited to share all of these DIY jewelry projects with you. You’ll be sure to love these Hungarian Folk-Style pendants because they’re simple and beautiful. Each design is so unique!

Hungarians prize folk art and crafts. Artists skilled at pottery, leather work, detailed embroidery, woodcarving, and blue-dying are highly respected. Most people know some basic craft skills and are happy to decorate their homes with handcrafted items. Using intricate decorations on everyday objects has become a part of life and folk arts have became part of the Hungarian national identity.

The inspiration for the Hungarian folk-style DIY necklace pendant came from my mother’s beautiful hand embroidered tablecloths.

I used readily available Hungarian folk style fonts (Kalocsai Flowers) and made a few of my own as well. Then, I transferred the line designs onto wood pendants which were then painted. I chose to use one color for each DIY jewelry design for a more modern look, however, you can make your necklace designs more colorful to stay true to the original inspiration.
