12 Days of Christmas Giveaway: Day 1

December 1, 2014 by AllFreeHolidayCrafts 111 Comments

We are bringing back our most popular holiday contest again and giving you a chance to enter to win a prize a day. Today marks the beginning of our 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway. From Monday, December 1st until Friday, December 12th, we here at CraftPaperScissors will be running a different giveaway each day. Check back with us every day to see a wonderful new craft and prize that you can win!

Today is the first day in our 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway. You can enter each day to win the prize of the day! Contest rules and how to enter are below.

On the first day of our 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway, my true love gave to me Hand-Dyed Wooden Ornaments from Rit Dye Studio. Turn an unfinished wood ornament into a colorful, personalized place card, party favor, or gift topper with Rit Dye. They also look great on your tree!

Make today’s project!

Dyed Ornament

Materials:

  • Rit Dye, liquid, in the color of choice
  • Unfinished wood ornament
  • Sharpie oil-based pen for wood in silver or gold
  • Bucket
  • Rubber or latex gloves
  • Measuring cup
  • Large metal spoon
  • Paper towels
  • Table cover or newspaper

Instructions:

  1. Cover work surface with a plastic table cover or old newspaper.
  2. Sand unfinished wood items lightly. Brush off dust.
  3. Shake dye bottle before measuring. Wearing latex gloves, measure and mix 1/2 cup Rit Dye with 6 cups very hot water; stir well. If water is not hot enough, heat some in a teakettle or in the microwave. Test dye color with a paper towel. If color is too light, add more dye; if color is too dark, add more water. Dye will appear lighter when dry.
  4. Dip wooden ornament into dye bath for a few minutes or until desired shade is achieved. Remove and dry on paper towels. Repeat for each ornament.
    To create table settings:
  5. After ornaments are completely dry, write name of person on each ornament for place settings using a Sharpie silver or gold oil based pen for wood.

Enter to win today’s prize!

My favorite type of ornament to make is crocheted snowflakes, bells, etc., using thread, and I think it would be fun to experiment with dyeing them different colors.

I love the apron and Color Perfect Dye Collection from Rit Dye Studio that is the first prize of the twelve -day Giveaway that runs from December 1 through December12.
I could really use a new apron–that would be great since the last apron I had is no longer in use–I retired it some years ago because it had gotten way too small (I just know it shrank from having been dried in the dryer all the many times it had to be washed—Yeah, right–LOL).
I could also use the dye to use on some project(s), yet to be started, so I can finish at the very least two projects, in time to give as Christmas presents.
And lastly, my BIRTHDAY is Christmas Day!!:-) It would be an unbelievably wonderful surprise if I was to win one prize for my birthday AND ALL the remaining eleven prizes for Christmas. Actually, I would be very happy to win ONE prize; I don’t fair well in contests or giveaways. I’m soon to turn 59, and I have participated in many giveaways/drawings and I have won two giveaways in all those years.
Having said all of that, I sincerely, wish everyone good luck. Thank you.

    Susie

I reread the instructions and realize I need a totally different comment…sorry! Since I can’t delete anything, how do I solve the problem? I would say:

“My only (partially successful) attempt at DIY decorations was small iced sugar cookies. Not a very smart choice!”

And I’m a children’s librarian, so I love doing crafts with the kids. This week we’ll be making and decorating cookies (paper and real) for National Cookie Day.

Every Christmas my daughters and grandchildren go into the craft room and have a “contest” to see what kind of ornaments we can make with what is on hand- we have turned out some very unique (and some hilariously funny) ornaments. One of my favorites is a photo of a famous celebrity who is holding her twin babies. One of my daughters cut out pictures of her and her sister ( adult heads) and pasted them on the faces of the babies. It makes me laugh every time I see it! Making homemade ornaments and having a homemade gift giving Christmas is something we have done for many many years and I hope they continue the tradition with their children.

One of the best gift ornaments i ever made was, a kitty ornament, felted with the cat hair from the recipiants own kitty, whom she had lost earlier that year. Out of all the gifts i have ever given, that one little ornament was the best! If you like to felt….using real pet hair is the best way to give special meaning to a gift. Happy Holidays Everyone!

I also do daily loom knitting. Ornaments with pine cones, and fabric covered Styrofoam ornaments. Working also on a bamboo and tiny mirrors wind chime. Learned to be very crafty from my Mom, every year she craft all her Christmas tree ornaments, we are always sharing supplies and ideas.

I really wanted an ornament with my bird on it but she was not a very popular breed and so I could never find one, I started painting my own ornaments when I was around 16 or 17! I try to paint a new one every year, sometimes with a pet or just a general holiday pattern. It is nice to see them each year.

I love to make homemade clay ornaments. It was a popular thing to do when I was a kid. The process begins with the dough’s mixing and making, then ornament shaping, followed by baking. Finally, it is time to painting. This is my favorite part. They may not be the most appealing of ornaments, but they sure are fun to make.

My favorite ornament to make is a reindeer bulb. You take a bulb of any color and hot glue antlers and any facial expression you want. They make adorable ornaments.

My favorite ornament to make is felt cutouts with all sorts of glitter! Usually the shapes are Xmas trees, cats, and whatever else I can crudely cut out haha

Favorite Christmas ornaments to make? Must be any that are made with the children… watching the magic in their eyes as they create is priceless.

I make apple potpourri rings. Sort of old fashioned but they smell great and last forever.

    With my husband helping,
we have cut out designs made
    from designs on my electric
    cutter in wood. Then painted
    them and embellished them
    to make ornaments.

The only ornaments that I have made have been the salt dough ornaments with my daughter’s hand and food prints!

I like to make ornaments out of things I can find in my yard. Wisteria vines are great for miniture wreaths, painted acorns, and pine cones.
