Jewelry Around the World Day 2: Hawaiian Orchid DIY Earrings

August 18, 2015 by Allison Cooling

Jewelry Around the WorldWelcome! It’s Day 2 of our Jewelry Around the World Promotion, and we’re so excited to share all of these DIY jewelry projects with you. These Hawaiian Orchid DIY Earrings are just too gorgeous, and they definitely have us wishing we were lounging on a beach, sticking our toes in the sand!

My Hawaiian Orchid Earrings are inspired by the beautiful, colorful, fragrant flowers of the Islands. Hawaii is always a place I wish I could travel to, and is sure on my bucket list. The pure beauty of the landscape, the island mood, the sweet drinks and fresh produce are all totally up my alley.

Coming from Chicago, which is a concrete jungle, the idea of this beachside retreat has always intrigued me. So, when I got these beautiful gold orchid posts and coated glass beads, I immediately thought of making something reminiscent of Hawaii. The Hawaiian orchid is my favorite flower, as they are so luxe-looking and always cheer me up.

This DIY jewelry idea is super simple to make, and it’s great for any beginner or advanced beader alike. Since the materials I used (I give you specific links!) give room for your own interpretation, you can have fun making these DIY earrings in different lengths, with different beads, and in different colors. These come together in less than 10 minutes – I swear. Put on some Hawaiian guitar music and let’s get to work!!

Step 1: Gather materials. Needed are Gold Orchid earring posts (from DoreenBeads.com), small gold link chain, gold headpins, glass crystals (I used a combination of 4mm faceted blue rounds and 8mm teal rondelles, both from DoreenBeads.com) glass AB coated beads (16X13mm blue glass beads, 23mm glass twisted beads, 18mm champagne teardrop beads — all from DoreenBeads.com again!), round nose pliers, flat nose pliers and wire cutters.

Step 2: Add your glass bead to the headpin, and create a top loop with your round nose pliers. Repeat. Cut a 2″ piece of chain (or however long you want your drops) and repeat.

Step 3: Open the top loop and attach to the chain piece. Repeat with the other piece.

Step 4: If you want to add another smaller dangle, then repeat the process using your smaller round faceted crystals and add this drop AND the twisted glass drop to a jumpring (4mm). Add the jumpring to the bottom attachment on the orchid post and close.

These are the perfect earrings for summer, as they combine total chicness with a pop of color. Pair with a flowy summer dress, strappy sandals, and a wide-brimmed hat, so you’re ready for any Hawaiian beach!
