How To Make a Rose Brooch Out of Canvas

April 9, 2020 by Divya N

Henri Matisse remarked that “There is nothing more difficult, for a truly creative painter, than to paint a rose, because before he can do so, he has first to forget all the roses that were ever painted.” But what if learning how to make a rose brooch can trigger memories of all the roses one ever saw?

How to Make a Rose Brooch

Roses have long been a symbol of love and even so of that of beauty. I’m glad that I learned how to make a rose brooch because I feel that they are the ultimate spring accessory as they make the wearer feel young, cheerful and beautiful. Whenever possible I wear real roses in my hair but I also love wearing fabric, leather or metal rose jewelry. But there are times when a real rose nor a silk flower will do, times when you require something a little more fun or a little more quirky. These painted canvas roses are perfect for such occasions. Apart from being made into a brooch, they can also be made into hair clips or pendants by changing the findings used. Plus they are a great project to do with kids over an evening. Here is how to make one for yourself.

1. Draw a 1″ circle, a 2.5″ spiral, 2 dumbbell-shaped petals 2.5″ long and 2 petals 3.5″ long.

2. Color the edges with pink metallic paint and smudge it in with water to get a watercolor effect.

3. Cut out the shapes once dry and curl the edges of the petal outwards using a toothpick.

4. Roll the spiral from outside in to create a rosebud, glue it to the base (center of the spiral).

5. Glue the more normal petals to the back of rosebud in the opposite direction and follow with the bigger petals. Shape them up as you glue.

6. Make two slits on the cut circle and insert the brooch pin as shown in the picture and glue it to the back of the rose.

7. Finish by gluing the stud to the center of the rose like a bud.
