Today’s Project
On the twelfth day of our 12 Days of Christmas in July Giveaway, my true love gave to me…these Knit Winter Scarf and Muff Patterns from Sullivans!
Winter Scarf Pattern
MATERIALS
- 2 – 100g (32yd) skeins of Sullivans USA Yorganza (100% polyester)
- Size 10 US needles
- Sewing needle, sewing thread to match
INSTRUCTIONS
Pick up 7 sts as follows: insert needle tip into the first hole on the top of the ribbon fabric. Weave the top from back to front through next 7 holes (7 sts on the needle).
Row 1: Insert RH needle into the last hole placed on the LH needle (as if to knit a st). Place next hole in fabric on the RH needle tip and pull the fabric through the hole on the LH needle (completing the knit st). Knit all stitches across the row in this manner.
Row 2 and all rows: Work as for row 1. Always turn the needle in the same direction after completing a row. Continue until scarf reaches desired length or until remaining ribbon fabric has at least 7 holes for casting off.
Last Row: Cast off all stitches by pulling the remaining fabric through the last stitch.
Finishing: To finish, sew the fabric end using your sewing needle and thread.
Winter Muff Pattern
MATERIALS
- 2 – 100g (32 yd) skeins of Sullivans USA Yorganza (100% polyester)
- Size 10 US needles
- Sewing needle, sewing thread to match.
INSTRUCTIONS
Pick up 14 sts as follows: insert needle tip into the first hole on the top of the ribbon fabric. Weave the top from back to front through next 14 holes (14 sts on the needle).
Row 1: Insert RH needle into the last hole placed on the LH needle (as if to knit a st). Place next hole in fabric on the RH needle tip and pull the fabric through the hole on the LH needle (completing the knit st). Knit all stitches across the row in this manner. Turn.
Row 2 and all rows: Work as for row 1. Always turn the needle in the same direction after completing a row. Continue until muff reaches desired length or until remaining ribbon fabric has at least 14 holes for casting off.
Last Row: Cast off all stitches by pulling the remaining fabric through the last stitch.
Finishing: Now you will need to sew the cast off row to the bottom side of the first row. To do this, lay the piece flat and fold the bottom ruffle up so that you can see the bottom of the cast on row. Using your sewing needle and thread attached the bottom and top of the piece to give the pice the round shape of a muff. Once you have sewed the top and bottom together, unfold the ruffle and your muff is complete.

It’s hard to decide what to make first with yorganza yarn as there are so many lovely alternatives….I’m thinking either a scarf for my sister, who is definitely a “fluffy” kind of gal or a toy for my grandson. Decisions, decisions, decisions….either way, you can’t go wrong.

Could make wonderful Christmas presents with these.
Although I would love to cuddle up in a scarf made from Yorganza (our Canadian winters can be pretty harsh), I think that this material would be ideal to make a “texture blanket” for a child. Children need sensory stimulation to develop growth and comfort within the world we live in, being able to feel and play with a frilly, “bumpy” blanket would be ideal. In fact, I suspect that the blanket would become “THE BLANKET” – a favourite security blanket. So, yup, I would make blankets for children.
Scarves for the less fortunate
Definitely the muff
I would make a beautiful baby blanket for my new grandson. For the remaining materials…ideas are endless. All I can think of is crafts, crafts, crafts! I think it would be a challenge to use this yarn. I would love to make a scarf for each of my family members along with a hat and possibly gloves that all match. It would depend on how the material worked for a hat and gloves. It would be something new for me to tackle and I think I would love to do that.
I love to learn new things. Sometimes they are easy and sometimes they are too hard for me and as I use looms it would really be a challenge so time will tell if I can make them or not.
