Trendy Paper Crafts: Adult Coloring Books + Giveaway

October 27, 2015 by Martha Bonneau 253 Comments

It’s been a long day, maybe things aren’t going as you had planned, so you are looking for a way to relieve your stress and anxiety. If you are at home, then you may turn to your go-to stress relievers like a hot bath or curling up with a good book (or a good paper crafts project), but what if you are at work or school and feel the need to take a break to de-stress? Craft ideas for adults serve as good sources of some of relaxation such as paper crafts and scrapbooking. Lately, more and more people are turning to adult coloring books as a new and alternative paper craft idea to help them relax.

Plus, scroll down for a chance to The Bloom Book by Jamie Dougherty!

Trendy Paper Crafts: Adult Coloring Books

That’s right, coloring books! But, these aren’t the coloring books you remember from your youth. These intricate coloring books are just as fun, yet they reflect your increase in skill (and taste) level. No offense cartoon characters, but the artwork in adult coloring books is just that: artwork. When checking out the top seller lists of popular websites and booksellers, these stress relieving coloring books are often found in the top 20 lists. They provide a soothing creative outlet and are easy to carry with you or have available in your desk drawer if a de-stressing break is needed.

You may be ready to give adult coloring books a try, but don’t know where to start, however, it’s pretty simple as you will only need a couple of supplies. You will need something to color, this can either be a coloring book or adult coloring pages that you can print at home. You will also need something to color with. The good news is that because of their recent popularity, adult coloring books are relatively easy to find. On a recent shopping trip, I saw them prominently displayed at our local bookstore as well as at two big-box craft supply stores. Themes range from geometric deigns to nature-inspired pages that feature florals, ocean scenes, and just about any wildlife you can imagine like these wonderful elephant coloring pages and birds and giraffes pages.

Trendy Paper Crafts: Adult Coloring Books

Once you have decided on which book or pages you would like to color, the next step is to decide what you will color with. The obvious choice of course is crayons. Coloring books and crayons go together like peanut butter and jelly. They are inexpensive, come in a wide variety of colors, and there are even twistable crayons that allow you to color more precisely on your pages. If you are a paper crafter, then you probably have other coloring mediums in your stash that you could use on your coloring pages. Supplies you may already have on hand may be colored pencils, watercolor pencils, gel pens, and markers. Most of us probably have brush pens or Copics that we have used when stamping that could be used when coloring as well. What you use to color with is a personal choice, some may like the lighter, softer effect of colored pencils while others prefer the bold colors of markers. This blogger does an excellent job defining each of the coloring media available to help you choose which is right for you, but don’t stress it, this is supposed to be relaxing! Find what works for you and your budget.

The Bloom Book Giveaway

In preparing this post I reached out to one of my very favorite mixed media artists, Jamie Dougherty, as she has recently designed her first adult coloring book called The Bloom Book. As a scrapbooker I have long been a fan of Jamie’s paper crafting and mixed media work (you must check out her beautiful Bloom Girls!) and I love her coloring book just as much!

Due to the success of her first coloring book, she is now in the process of designing another book and has generously offered a copy of The Bloom Book to a Craft, Paper, Scissors reader.

To enter the giveaway, leave a comment below telling us:

What is your favorite medium to color with?

And the winner is… Edith Edwards!

Edith said, “pencils…I love coloring for it relieves the stress…would love to win.”

Thanks for entering, everyone! Edith, we’ll email you about your prize.

I live with my husband, 7 and 4 year old daughters, and a pug named Pixie in Crystal Lake, Illinois which is in the ‘burbs NW of Chicago.
I started scrapping in 2006 and was quickly addicted!I was an avid scrapper until late summer of 2010 when we started our adoption journey, at that point I was overwhelmed with paperwork (and emotions!) and I had to put something on the back burner in my life but I knew I would eventually come back to it.
We welcomed our daughter home from China in December of 2011 and a few months later I found my groove again and pulled out all of those supplies that had been tucked away.
I started out scrapping again doing traditional layouts, but at the beginning of this year I jumped into Project Life and I love it!
When I’m not scrapping I am usually spending time with our daughters which means library time, going on walks, thrifting (they love it as much as I do!) or watching Kung Fu Panda for the millionth time.I also have an Etsy shop Panda Eight Designs where I sell scrapbooking flair that I design.

I color with my grandchildren alot. I prefer colored pencils because of the slim point. I like coloring intricate designs. It really takes my mind off all the stresses of everyday life and especially with my failing health I have to be down alot so between my computer and coloring it keeps me sane.

I colour most often with pencil crayons although markers make a more vibrant picture. Using pencils allows a greater range of effects – press hard or lighter, fill the space or make swirls or stripes. I would like to try water colours sometime.

I haven’t done this in a long time since then . Now I would like to get back into it but I think with these new coloring pages that are out I’m going to try coloring pencils. Good Luck to all !

I love to color but haven’t been able to find anything other than children’s cartoon coloring books. I am an avid crocheter, which is a great stress reliever, but I think back to my childhood when every Christmas I would get a new coloring book and crayons and the hours of enjoyment they brought me. I can’t say I have a favorite medium I like to color with, I just want to try everything. Thank you for the opportunity to win this.

I prefer to color with colored pencils. Fine details can be colored with better control and accuracy than with crayons and they don’t bleed like markers might. Recently when supervising a group of 4th and 5th graders (ages 9 to 11) that were coloring adult coloring sheets I gave in to temptation and colored sheet of my own. Now I’m hooked on adult coloring! I would love to win a copy of The Bloom Book!!

I’m physically disabled, have lupus, a tumor in my brain, and arthritis, and I’m most always in pain that my doctors haven’t figured out how to control well. I began coloring again to take my mind off of my pain. I mainly use colored pencils and crayola markers to color because, though I’d love to have artist quality supplies, i can’t afford them. My mom gave me a set of color soft pencils for my birthday, and I really like them because they have a soft coating that lets me use them a bit longer than others. This book looks lovely! I’d love to win such a nice book. Congratulations to whoever wins!

These days I use coloured pencils (mostly) for colouring. That might be because I’m new at the “adult” colouring thing, and don’t want to wreck anything. 🙂 Don’t worry, I’m determined to get over that, and go on to the bolder look of markers. I got some PanPastels for my fall birthday, and am having lots of fun learning to use these on cards and in my art journal.

I just bought my friend an adult colouring book. I think I will get her colour pencils , and maybe and maybe some crayons too. I used to colour as a kid, and I remember the box of 64 crayons, which I loved and kept in order, with the paper on as long as I could because I liked the names.

I love doing it all but I stay busy and I do my crafts when I have free time. I spend the most time on my crafts around Christmas because a lot of it I will make as gifts. I found one day while I was doodling (for my free motion quilting practice) that she suddenly stopped raving and just quietly began to watch what I was doing. It seemed to be calming her. I found a couple of beautiful pages and colouring pencils. I left them on the table and she has begun to colour them. I prefer using coloured pencils when colouring in adult colouring book. For me I feel the colours come out very nicely and you are able to change how the colour looks simply by changing how much pressure you apply while colouring. Also, I prefer the pencils to crayons because I feel the coverage and the consistency of the colour is better. And I prefer them to markers because you are still able to get a vibrant picture without having the colour bleed through the page potentially ruining the picture being coloured as well as any picture that may be on the other side of or on the next page of the colouring book.

Most paper crafts from making journals to paper making, beading, sewing, photography, card making, redo furniture, on and on. Coloring and doodling help to transition or if I just get stuck

I have always loved colouring, and I find now that I have time in which I would love to work on an adult colouring book. I find that this kind of colouring is best done with crayons. I can make a sharp point on my crayon which gets into the tiny spaces of these colouring pages.

Colored with crayons and cra pas as a child. Used pens and pencils in high school, and ink in college. As a parent I began using fiber as my medium until my oldest daughter hooked me on scrapbooking. Now I use colored pencils and pens to enhance my pages and create titles. I’ve colored on computer apps but it is never as satisfying or precise as pencils

I love to color and use a variety of methods. My favorite is gel pens, standard colors, glitter, metalic and neon colors. I also use crayons, color pencils, markers and watercolor paints. I enjoy coloring and it has a calming effect. When I am not crocheting, knitting or doing needlepoint, I usually color, and usually try to include the grandchildren or some of the younger neighborhood children to introduce them to the world of crafting. I would love to win and add this to my collection of crafts.

The articles and their reports about the benefits and decreasing stress have been substantiated by the individuals themselves. My favorate way to colour is pencil crayons, but I’ve been experimenting with watercolour/acrylic paints/pencils and I’m even thinking of trying my gelotos & an aqua brush. Anything I can add colour with. It all depends on the size of the page and the areas to be coloured in. That said…I still find My favourite way to colour is pencil crayons…so far. I get better coverage & no worrying about colouring outside the finer areas!
