Going to my sister’s house to make and decorate sugar cookies–it starts out fairly normal and traditional and by the zillionth cookie, things have degenerated and some truly weird cookies are produced! Even better are the memories of weird cookies of the past…yep, this is by far my favorite thing!

My Christmas tree is covered with my favorite collectibles—angels. I have some ornaments that have always been angels and others that I have “created” as angels by adding wings and a halo. My other collectibles are Eeyore and Betty Boop, so I have their angel “personae” on the tree along with all the others.

We have a number of Christmas traditions taken from both of our families. But my favorite one is on Christmas Eve, I make my father-in-law’s Clam Chowder, due to my husband’s job he has worked Christmas Eve for most of our married life, as we are able and then attend Christmas Eve Services. The children, who are now adults, would open their gifts from my husband’s side and then Christmas morning we would get up early and open the rest of the presents. We had a wonderful time of excitement and wonder.

Of course there are always plenty of homemade goodies and snack foods around too. Then we open gifts one at a time so everyone can see what each person received and it helps to stretch out the gift opening time. There is nothing better than getting together during the holidays! 🙂

I would make hot chocolate and we ate the tin of popcorn that you can get at Walmart for like $6. We would light the fire place and watch home alone. After the movie, we would set out Christmas cookies for Santa and go to bed. I miss this si much because now my children are grown but if I could turn back the hands of time, I would go back to Christmas, when my children were young. My holiday tradition is to number the packages for each child and open them in order except for the last and best gift – a note is on the Christmas tree with their names and they have to read the notes and follow the clues to find their last gift.

We all drew names on Thanksgiving and set a cap on the amount of money to be spent on the gifts. Everyone gets a gift, and not a lot of money had to be spent. It takes a whole weekend to get everything done and I really enjoy the time with my family. My family consists of 4 adult children, 11 grandchildren some of whome are adults and 2 great grandchildren. But my family continues to grow which is wonderful and ensures that we always have new people to involve and teach how to make all the recipes and crafts.

When my children grew up and moved away, they each received all of their ornaments. I am always amazed to listen to them tell about each ornament, and what it represented.

As a child, Mama would make me reindeer food. This consists of oatmeal and glitter, of course. We would go out to the front lawn on Christmas Eve and spread the reindeer food. Santa got milk and cookies but the reindeer need a snack too! So Mama invented this tradtion. A tradition I’ve carried on with my children. And next year our granddaughter will be old enough to sprinkle her own bag of reindeer food!

My daughter is a part of a homescool choir, and every year for the first two weeks of December they go all over our city singing and dancing at various places.. But the very best part is that they share the good news to every type of person that they can, the young, the old, the sick, the healthy, the lower, middle, and upper class, because Christ was born to save the whole world and this choir makes sure they get that message out there!

Even if family duties keep them away from us on Christmas morning, they know that their filled stocking will arrive a few days prior to Christmas so it can travel with them to wherever they may be on Christmas morning. In addition, I have now made handmade stockings for my husband, 2 sons-in-law and 1 grandson.

My favorite tradition of Christmas, which my son now does with his family, was to go out to a tree farm and select a tree that everyone had to agree on and cut it down ourselves. We went to the same tree farm for over 20 years. On the way home with the tree, we’d stop for hot chocolate and to discuss the merits of the tree we’d just chosen. We started this when my 30 yo son was 1 year old and only stopped last year because both boys are out on their own and my husband and I are starting to have trouble getting around in the field. But I’ll always remember those trips and running through the fields with my children. What fun we had!

Our tradition started at the wrapping stage. To eliminate the frenzy often associated with gift opening, when children are involved, each person had to guess what their gift was, thus the imagination went wild in the wrapping process to make it difficult to guess and more of a surprise when the treasure was finally revealed.

When my kids were little I would cover their bedroom doors frames with wrapping paper. It was in an attempt to keep them in their rooms and away from peeking under the tree at what santa brought. My kids are 21 and 16 and they still ask for their doors to be “wrapped” for Christmas morning 🙂

Every year I find a craft project or two that my children can enjoy making and gather the needed supplies. We spend a morning (or more, if they really get into it) making gifts they can give to their teachers, aunts and uncles, neighbors and friends. It gets all of us into the spirit of the season and we all enjoy the process, even if all of the products aren’t perfect.

When my husband and I married my step-children had at least 5 Christmas celebrations to attend. At each one they were given presents. By the time the 4 of us celebrated, their hands were out expecting presents. We decided that we would have fun with them. Each year we had them do something different before getting there gifts: treasure hunt, clue game using the living room floor, and a scavenger hunt. To this day my kids remember what we did, but not what their gifts were!

Favorite Christmas traditions often change as the family grows up and changes. When my children were younger my favorite tradition was making popcorn and watching Christmas cartoons like Rudolph, then reading the Night Before Christmas and the Bible story of the birth of Christ. Now that I am a grandmother I hope to share these traditions with my grandchildren, and maybe start a few new traditions.

Last year was the first year that he needed help to remember the words, this year he will need even more help. So this favorite tradition is in the process of ending. I hope that I can find a way to keep it going with my family.

My favorite Christmas tradition is for my children to all come home on Christmas eve. After dinner we sit by the tree and exchange gifts that are handmade. Every year we draw names on Christmas day. The person you draw gets a handmade gift from you the following christmas. Let me tell you, having young grand babies makes it very interesting because thier gift has to be made by them with minimal help from the parents. This is a tradition my husband and I started with our kids when our first born was five, he’s now 27. Traditions you start today become treasures tomorrow.

My favorite tradition was always for our whole family to get out our snow shoes and walk through the woods to find the perfect Christmas tree to cut, and take home on our sled. When our son was little he rode on the sled too. We would only top the tree so it would still grow, or take one that was too close to other trees. So, this usually took several hours and we brought hot chocolate with us for a treat. We also had to all agree on the tree which sometimes took longer. Lol.

When my children were small my favorite thing was doing stuff that kept them believing in Santa. I did things like leaving Santa’s glasse near their note. Losing Santa’s wallet on the couch, it included his sleigh licence, North pole credit card and a note from Mrs. Santa. He’s left special ink pens, and fallen out of the chimney throwing presents everywhere. One of my favorite ones was when Santa got a bike stuck in the fireplace. At times I wish they still believed.

My favorite Christmas is one that started when I was very small and we continue today. The family gathers for the traditional dinner of oyster stew and chili. An odd combination but my dad grew up having chili on Christmas Eve. My mother’s father would spend Christmas with us but didn’t like chili. He grew up having oyster stew for Christmas Eve but my dad doesn’t like oyster stew. So my mom would make both. Grandpa has been gone for 40 years but we continue the tradition. As we go around the dinner table giving thanks we always thank Grandpa for being with us.

We sadly don’t do my 2 favorite traditions anymore. After mom passed away, we stopped having a variety of German sausages with potato salad for dinner on Christmas Eve. We started this after mom got divorced, and had to work most Christmas Eve days. That made it harder to prepare a full meal, so she started to make the potato salad the night before, and then just had to boil the sausages when she got home. We also had a REAL Christmas tree every year. There were even years, while stationed in Germany, that the tree didn’t get decorated, because we’d get it, and then drive up to my grandparents for Christmas! LOL! But, I HAD to have my tree. Again, after mom died, I haven’t been in a Christmasy mood, so my daughter just puts up mom’s artificial tree. I just haven’t been in the mood to insist on my tree. Hope to one day again.

My favorite Christmas tradition is when my whole family gathers for Christmas Eve dinner. At desert, the kids get to open “just one” present. We then all pile into as few cars as we can and head to Christmas Eve Candlelight Service to celebrate the birth of our Saviour. The service ends at about midnight and as we walked outside, I swear I could hear the angels announcing His birth!

The (now grown) children come over, we have dinner, we take our coffee and dessert into the living room, put up the tree and we get out the 3 boxes of ornaments…. We sit and reminisce about each hand made ornament- how it was made, what was happening in our lives, and who made it, and with what. We are all usually screaming laughing when the ornaments they made in kindergarten come out- mostly made with macaroni and styrofoam. Every year they just cannot believe that the object looked so good when they made it and years and years later, looks pretty sad. These ornaments, of course, go in the front of the tree where they can be seen by all!

We all open up Santa’s presents Christmas morning and they truly believe we are also Santa’s helpers. We couldn’t be more grateful for our little family and in the midst of all our trials in life our kids are worth it and every Christmas is great. They are true angels and never whine, cry or show any ungratefulness for however much or little they receive. This is a tradition we hope to always share no matter how old they get.

Opening the gifts left in our Christmas stockings all together on our King-size bed. When all have been opened, exhibited, admired, played with, etc., we have breakfast there – coffee, cocoa, tangerines from the stockings, and warm, home-made pecan rolls. Then all are free to dress, and proceed as a group, down to the Christmas tree, where Daddy and his little helpers distribute the gifts, to be opened one at a time as everyone else watches. It is a time of family togetherness, with little prayers of thankfulness for the Gift we received from God at the first Christmas interspersed frequently. We try never to forget the “Reason for the Season”!

My family’s traditions began when I was very young. Some years we would spend with my mom’s side of the family other years we would spend with my dad’s. No matter where we were or how many presents we received everyone had a grand time. The noise levels were atrocious as we laughed, played games, and reminisced. Sadly, my grandparents and most of my aunts and uncles have since passed. Our stories now tell our own kids of them who have been lost. As an adult with my own little family, my household has added another tradition. We spend Christmas Eve with my husband’s side of the family. Christmas Day is usually with my side. Where ever we are, whom ever we are with, we haven’t forgotten the reason we celebrate. LOVE.

It is gorgous, passed it on on to my two grand daughters, now 14 and 12 and this year my son had a son of his own so we passed it to Carter, he is only 6 months old but he will enjoy it as much as my daughter, son and grand daughters have. Love the afghan. Also, in the 70’s someone gave me the recipe for potica, have made it every year since, we love it. Does not smell like Christmas without that wonderful smell while it is baking. I have 8 grandchildren and started this tradition when it became too expensive to buy gifts for everyone. All the grandchildren get a brown bag decorated with themes that remind me of that particular one. I crochet each one a special item, gloves, hats, headbands, and bracelets, just to name a few. I include their favorite candies, and also make cookies. Included is a fruit that is common here in Louisiana, the satsuma, which is a type of orange. They all love their gifts, even the oldest who is 17. This will be the first Christmas for the youngest. Our latest little man was born in October. Christmas is a great time for my family as we all get together to have a gumbo, and exchange gifts.

When I had my first child I started buying or making an ornament every year. He is now 19 and I have 3 more that I do the same for! We breached the two tote mark last year for their ornaments alone! That doesn’t include all the stuff they have made at school, which is my next favorite tradition!

My favorite Christmas tradition is setting up my 4ft tall theme trees. Almost all of the decorations for these trees are handmade, largely by me. They include the Nutcracker Tree (ballerinas and nutcrackers), the snowmen and snowladies tree, the Swedish tree (heart shape woven baskets, gnomes) knitted mini mittens and sweater tree, the Diva tree (mini high heels, tiaras, boas and glitter ornaments), the knitted mini fairisle stocking tree and the beaded snowflake tree.

Our favorite Christmas Tradition is going out to look at Christmas lights on Christmas Eve. We take along hot chocolate and popcorn and follow the route that usually appears in the local newspaper so that we get to all the really special displays. We listen to Christmas music as we drive and talk about all the Christmases past. When we get home, we all get to open one present before we go to bed.

I have made Christmas tree bread since the mid 60s. I shape them like trees to fit the sizes of the families of all my neighbors and friends. I frost them with green frosting and colored sugar or sprinkles. When my oldest son had children, he does the same thing for his neighbors. They always look forward to these trees and I have never missed a year, so far.

Every year my family goes to see Santa Land and get a new stocking for my daughter she’s 12, her last stocking will be when she’s 18. I’ve done this for my son, then they get an adult stocking for age 19, then I take the stockings and make a throw with them with old favorite shirts. I also take a picture of them holding the stocking and place them in that stocking.

It was ALWAYS Christmas pajamas so that we would be in Christmas jammies for photos the next morning. So we were always excited to open a gift early and it was something we were going to get anyway. Great hack mom and grandma! Fyi it took probably until I was 12 before I actually knew what would be in my box. Smh 🙂

Our family favorite thing is making chocolates. There are probably 15 different kinds we make a few are white chocolate covered pretzels and peanut butter balls. We share these with family and friends and sometimes give them as gifts.

We have only done it once so far (last year)…. but we will again this year also. Taking gifts to a local transitional living home and doing a gift wrapping party with the mothers there. Someone always helped me when I needed it.

Here in the mountains we go out and cut down our tree. We always look for the underdog. Then we decorate it with things from nature and make that little underdog the most beautiful tree ever. This is our highlight of the season.
We watch all of the Christmas movies from our childhood as well.

My Mother made all the ceramic pieces, glazed them for all her children {there are 5 of us} .I also like decorating the tree. When my kids were small, we’d make a family evening out of it. Family getting together on Christmas Eve, nibbling on scrumptious appetizers while everyone opens one gift. Then we follow this with a surf & turf dinner and, afterwards, sit around the table chatting some more while we enjoy coffee and a variety of desserts. Finally, no one is allowed to leave without first taking a bag filled with assorted leftovers and sweets!

My favourite Christmas tradition is doing gingerbread houses with the children. Since all the children are so far away now, I bake the pieces, seal royal icing in disposable piping bags, package everything up extremely carefully, and Mail the fixings. This year it will just be my granddaughters getting packages, but I will be building a village for the local humane society to raffle off, too.

Now that the grandkid are here it makes it enjoyable to explain the meaning of all the ornaments. I painted our windows when our kids were little. Mostly we had Christmas scenes I painted on the windows. However, we always saved one window in the front of the house that the kids picked out for the ‘Jesus window’. In that one I painted a birthday cake with the words ‘Happy Birthday Jesus”. Then to top things off we always had a ‘red cake’ with light green frosting and when it was cut we sang ‘Happy Birthday to Jesus”.
