Getting Started

Polymer clay may stain. CLAY MAY DAMAGE UNPROTECTED FURNITURE OR FINISHED SURFACES. DO NOT USE polymer clay on unprotected surfaces. We recommend working on the Sculpey ® clay mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275°F (130°C) for 30 minutes per ¼” (6 mm) thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be completed by an adult.
Begin by preheating oven to 275°F (130 °C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the Clay Conditioning Machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.

Things to Note:

This project uses the Design-It Templates in the jewelry shapes. In an effort to clearly indicate which of the two cut outs are being used for this project, an image of a traced template is shown in these instructions. Two of the cutouts are numbered and will be referenced as either “cutout 1” or “cutout 2” in the following steps.

Step 1:

Condition ½ block of Peacock Pearl and roll out sheet of clay with the Clay Conditioning Machine set to a medium thickness. Place the sheet of clay onto the ceramic tile, smooth the sheet of clay onto the tile, and texture the surface of the clay with the Scotch Brite pad. Place the chevron piece called out as “cutout 1” onto the textured surface of the clay. Gently rub the template piece onto the clay so it stays in place. Use the Super Slicer blade to cut along the edges of the template. Once you have cut around all of the edges of the template gently lift the template piece. Reposition the template piece onto the surface of the clay and repeat. You need to cut out a total 3 Peacock Pearl chevron pieces. Once you have all three chevron pieces cut out, lift away the excess clay and leave the chevrons of clay on the tile.

Step 2:

Condition ½ block of Purple and ¼ block of Purple Pearl together until the color of the clay is consistent, meaning no streaks. You need to cut out a total 3 chevron pieces. Use the 1/2” triangle cutter to cut out 2 triangles. Once you have all three chevron and two triangle pieces cut out, lift away the excess clay and leave the chevrons and triangles of clay on the tile.

Step 3:

Condition 3/4 block of Graphite and ¼ block of White Gold Glitter together until the color of the clay is consistent, meaning no streaks. Place the sheet of clay onto the ceramic tile and smooth the sheet of clay onto the tile. Place the chevron piece called out as “cutout 2” onto the textured surface of the clay. Gently rub the template piece onto the clay so it stays in place. Use the Super Slicer blade to cut along the edges of the template. Once you have cut around all of the edges of the template gently lift the template piece. Reposition the template piece onto the surface of the clay and repeat. You need to cut out a total 3 chevron pieces. Once you have all three chevron pieces cut out, lift away the excess clay and leave the chevrons of clay on the tile. Bake all of the chevrons and triangle pieces together on the tile for 15 minutes and let cool completely.

Step 4:

To start assembling the chevron stacks remove 1 each of the three different colored chevrons from the ceramic tile. Place the Graphite/White Gold Glitter chevron onto an index card. Pick up the Peacock Pearl chevron and rub a thin coat of Bake ‘N Bond onto the back (non-textured side). Note: The wood ruler is being used in this step as a tool to help make sure all of the chevron assembly pieces are positioned evenly. Position the edge of the thick wood ruler on top of the Graphite/White Gold Glitter chevron so it is lined up along one of the edges at the top. Hold the ruler in place, pick up the Purple/Purple Pearl chevron piece and place it on top of the Graphite/White Gold Glitter chevron so it is butted up against the ruler and the outer edges are lined up with the Graphite/White Gold Glitter chevron edges. Once you have the two pieces lined press down on the Purple/Purple Pearl chevron and remove the ruler. Pick up the Peacock Pearl chevron, rub a thin coat of Bake ‘N Bond onto the back, and place on top of the Graphite/White Gold Glitter chevron so all of the bottom edges line up. Repeat this process 2 more times but with the Peacock Pearl chevrons placed on the top edge and the Purple/Purple Pearl pieces at the bottom. Bake the assemblies for 15 minutes and let cool completely.

Step 5:

Condition the Black clay and roll out a large sheet, about 6” wide by 6” long, on a medium/thin setting on the Clay Conditioning Machine. Texture the sheet of clay with the Scotch Brite pad. Flip the sheet of clay over and place it texture side down onto a sheet of plain copy paper. Pick up the chevron assembly that has the Purple/Purple Pearl chevron at the top, rub a thin coat of Bake ‘N Bond on the back, and place it onto the sheet of Black clay so that it is centered along the width and towards the bottom. Gently press the chevron piece into the Black clay. Pick up one of the Purple/Purple Pearl triangles and rub a thin coat of Bake ‘N Bond onto the back and along two of the edges. Place the triangle so one edge that has the Bake ‘N Bond is against the edge of the chevron and the points of the triangle and chevron line up. Repeat this with the second triangle adding it to the other side of the chevron. Press the triangles into the sheet of black clay while making sure they are also pressed up against the sides of the chevron.

Step 6:

Pick up one of the two remaining chevron assemblies. Rub a thin coat of Bake ’N Bond onto the back and place it to it is butted up against the edge of a triangle on one side and also so the points are lined up. Press the chevron into the black clay while making sure it is also pressed up against the triangle. Repeat this process with the remaining chevron putting it in place against the triangle on the other side of the formation. Use the Super Slicer blade to trim all of the way around the formation of chevrons. Once you have cut all of the way around peel away the excess clay.

Step 7:

Lay another piece of copy paper over the formation of chevrons, Place your hand on top of the paper, left the stack of paper/clay/paper and carefully flip it over. Lift the top piece of paper off of the surface of the clay, the textured black clay side should now be facing up. Use the wire cutters to cut the length of the finished ball chain in half. Position one of the cut ends of the chain so it is on the outside tip on one side of the chevron formation and a couple of balls worth of the chain in from the point. Press the chain into the clay and use the Super Slicer to trim away any clay that squished past the edges. Repeat this process on the other side of the chevron formation with the second half of the ball chain. Bake the chain into the clay for 15 minutes and let cool.

Step 8:

Once the piece has cooled add a small dab of Bake ‘N Bond over the section of chain that is baked into the clay. Roll a small ball of Black clay, press it onto the chain so the piece of chain is sandwiched into the Black clay. Use your finger to smooth the clay so it blends into the back of the piece. Use the Scotch Brite pad to texture the clay and then trim any excess clay that squished past the edges. Repeat on the other side and bake for 15 minutes. Once the piece is completely cooled you’re finished.
