I love both! However quilting gives me sense of comfort. It reminds of the time I spent as a child helping my grandmother with hers. It such a sentimental craft.

I’m a Nurse and I make baby quilts and give them to my patients when they have a new baby.

Quilting. If you make an error (say, put a block upside down), it is creatively experimental. If you make an error sewing (say, put a sleeve on upside down), it is just a time consuming flub. Personally, experimentation works better for me!

Quilting is sewing – just a specific type of sewing, but it does not include all types of sewing.

So the answer to this is SEWING!

I LOVE SEWING – All Sewing! And that includes quilting!

Although quilting is a form of art, I think sewing is more versatile and useful at the same time. I have been an avid sewer since a child and have created whole wardrobes with a few simple sewing skills. I am looking forward to designing some awesome art quilts however. Sewing can be “taken up a notch” by using the needle and thread as a tool to create something of beauty and a delight to the eye…

I’m new to quilting/piecing. I love doing hand work, (needlepoint, crewel, candlewicking) so I’ll love hand quilting. At this point, piecing is more of a challenge for me; one I am hoping to master.

I’ve sewn since I was a girl. I like the gratification of seeing my project coming together. And I’m a stickler for perfection. (I’ve even come up with some techniques that go beyond pattern instructions for a more finished look!) I like all kinds of projects…kids’ clothes, hot pads/mitts, wine totes, aprons, etc.

The best tip…if you are only wanting one of it…buy it at a craft fair! Then you won’t have tons of extra supplies in your craft room wanting to be used or given away !

I have done a considerable amount of garment sewing through the years but I have come to settle on quilting. To me it is much more rewarding although garment sewing is no insignificant achievement either. Since I no long go to a job every day I don’t need the wardrobe that I previously required. Therefore, I turned to quilting and have enjoyed every minute of it.

Have made a crib quilt in my favorite…… red, whit and blue. Have sewed dozens of squadron patches, tactical airlift command patches and so on. Sewing Halloween costumes. Ironing fatigues……yes, same iron.. The steam saturates the ironing board and occassionally I get burned by spurting water.
I did sew myself some kitchen cafe’ curtains. Stitching skipped here and there but…just shows not made in China. So, I guess, sewiing is king for me. Gonna Google quilt patterns now. Feeling inspired now. THNX-

I tend to get a little cranky if I go three or four days away from my sewing machine. It is imperative your iron be in the ready position when quilting and not spit or run out of steam before you. There is nothing more aggravating than a bad iron! Quilting just inspires the artistic side in me, I loved learning to piece blocks, and have yet to master it as it does become quite difficult to comprehend how it is done in different ways.

I am just happy that I have found something to enjoy since becoming disabled and no longer able to enjoy the things that used to make up my life.

It would have to be sewing. When I was growing up we could not afford store bought cloths so my Mother made everything for us. She was a great teacher and I learn to make my own cloths at a early age. I have made cloths for my children and now I’m making them for my grandchildren. I’m so glad my Mother showed me how t sew.

I love to sew. I hadn’t done it since a young child and started back recently. My daughter was having my grandson and I wanted to make him something homemade and from the heart. I hand sewed him a sock monkey and we took it to church one Sunday and my creation started a sock monkey craze everyone wanted me to make one for them. So much so I had to buy a sewing machine and my love of creating and sewing took a life of its own. I love it, I just hate I missed so many years without sewing. I’m now teaching my six year old granddaughter to sew and she’s got her first sewing machine under the Christmas tree right now, I think I’m more excited than she will be. I pray I have many more years left to live and sewing will definitely be a part of each and everyone.

Hmmm….what do I love more, you ask….sewing or quilting? If I had to give up either one, I’d be devastated. I’ve been “sewing” since I was in junior high and making that yellow apron with orange stitching got me hooked. I still have that apron AND use it after 40 years! I was #7 of 8 kids and my mom made a lot of her own clothes, plus her kids, mostly to save money. I remember wearing the ugliest brown knit pants in 6th grade and being made fun of because of them. I was so thrilled to learn to sew then in junior high, that I started to make my own pants. Yep, lots of trial and errors, but I was mostly pleased with the outcomes. I was even in a fashion show! Today, I continue to sew and make clothes and have found a new love for quilting. I am broadening my skills with paper piecing, hexagons and free motion quiliting….so the love goes on!

    Fran S.

I have been sewing for over 50 years. I come from a family of sewers – my mother’s sister worked in a “cotton factory”, sewing sheets, pillowcases and jeans during the 2nd World War and continued as a seamstress long afterwards. My mother sewed our clothing when we were children and to this day (she is 89) still sews occasionally. I made my first article (an apron) at school and was hooked from then on! (My mother still has the apron – and it looks like new!) I sewed clothing for myself when in my teens and made most of my Christmas gifts, much to the embarrassment of my 3 brothers (“What do I do with this?!”). Admittedly, as I look back on those days, not all items were appealing to everyone, I guess.
When I married, I sewed for our bedrooms, kitchen, etc., and then, as the children arrived, made many of their outfits. My daughter, when in grade 4, finally asked me not to make any more of her clothes – “the other kids know they are homemade, because there is no designer label in them.” I was crushed! However, in years to come, she was to ask me to sew her wedding dress, so I surmised that my sewing ability couldn’t have been that bad after all!
I moved to a small community where I worked in a fabric store which sold mostly quilting fabrics – and fell in love with the vibrant colours and patterns offered in quilting. I never saw a paycheque – I took fabric instead! I joined the local quilt guild, met many wonderful new friends, and have learned SO much more about sewing. Quilting is challenging, fun and so personally satisfying. I am now a “Fabricaholic”, unable to resist buying the beautiful materials I discover in shops wherever I go.
Do I prefer “sewing” or “quilting”, you ask? Why, they are really one and the same, aren’t they? Both sewing and quilting present challenges in their patterns. If you quilt by machine, you are still sewing; only instead of producing an article of clothing to be worn with pride and made from love, you are creating something that will envelope someone in warmth and, hopefully, will convey just how much love went into the making of that quilt.
Our body shape and taste in fashion will undoubtedly change, but I am hoping that the wonderful patterns and colours in quilting will never die!

I like both, but last year started quilting. It doesn’t involve the fitting of things like clothing, which I like better.

I started with sewing. Made a cathedral coverlet and repaired quilts my grandmother made. Realized if I could repair, I could make. First quilt was bedspread size applique quilt, completely hand quilted which I still use.
Also do many other needlework crafts. I like the challenge of all the handeork and sewing crafts.

Both methods result in beautiful projects. However, I do prefer sewing since it covers so many areas that I enjoy working with i.e. crafts, baby clothes, totes, pillow covers, holiday specials, etc. The sewing projects can be as simple or as complex as you allow them to be. I enjoy giving my projects away as gifts,

My mother introduced me to sewing by enrolling me in sewing classes at a Singer sewing center when I was in 7th grade and I am 60+ years old. A couple of years ago, I was introduced to quilting and also machine embroidery. I must say that I enjoy all aspects of these crafts. They allow me to create many beautiful things to give as gifts and provides me the tranquility from all stress. I am very thankful to my mother for providing me the opportunity to be introduced to sewing and because of this, I can sew, make simple quilts and machine embroider. Thank you mom for everything!
