What to Do With Old Greeting Cards

January 24, 2017 by Einat Kessler 2 Comments

During the holiday season, we all get lots of cards. the question is What to Do with Old Cards after the holiday season is over? Do you throw them away, keep them in a box or just reuse them for something else. Here are a few ideas:

  1. Scan them and store them on your computer. I’m talking about the more personal cards with those special words you want to keep. They will take much less room on your computer…
  2. Use the cards as supplies. Cut words, letters and images from old cards and create new cards for any occasion you need.
  3.  Embellish scrapbook layout. Use titles and images from old cards to embellish layouts and add titles.
  4. Re-purpose cards tops into postcards. It’s true that nowadays almost nobody sends postcards anymore, but it would be fun to do it again…
  5.  Donate them. A lot of organizations, from Girl Scouts to YMCA and Kiwanis summer camp programs, can use your card tops for their craft projects all year long. Summer camp season is almost here so now is the time.
  6. Make magnets. Use cute characters or images from the card to create magnets by simply gluing a magnet to the back of the cut image.
  7.  Create mini puzzles. Create mini puzzles for your kids or as gifts from colorful and elaborate cards tops.
  8. Frame them. Many cards have beautiful art or motivational text on them. Enjoy them year round by framing them and hang on the wall or give them as gifts.

With these great ideas you will get so much more out of your old cards you will never throw them again.

When she was a young girl Einat used to sit on the carpet at her grandparents’ house with a huge scrapbook on her knees looking through it with amazement. These albums, created from scratch by her grandfather took her imagination to faraway places and sparked her creativity years later. When her first son was born her grandfather suggested she would create a scrapbook to document his life. Einat was bit by the scrapbooking bug and the rest is history.
Today Einat is a versatile designer who owns her own business. She dabbles in various crafts from scrapbooking and altered art to mixed media and 3D paper crafts. She teaches online classes and design for several companies. She shares her projects and designs on her blog, FB page and very successful YouTube channel.

These are all really great ideas for recycling holiday cards. I have a ton of card fronts stashed because they were too pretty to just throw away. I like to bring them out during the holiday season and display them in a vintage wire Christmas tree I found at an estate sale-it has little circular clips that the cards fit into and it looks very elegant. I might rotate those into some craft projects like you mentioned here. Thanks for sharing!

I collect the fronts of cards , package them nicely, and donate them to my local thrift store where they are sold as craft supplies to teachers, club leaders or moms.
